SQL Server Database Administrator

We are seeking an experienced SQL Server Database Administrator to manage and optimize a growing SQL environment. The role focuses on database administration, performance tuning, monitoring, backups, and troubleshooting, while supporting a planned upgrade from SQL Server 2014/2016 to SQL Server 2022, with awareness of SQL Server 2025 capabilities.

This is a highly independent role. The ideal candidate responds to issues as they arise and provides guidance and best practices, without being required to be logged in full-time. Familiarity with Windows Server and Active Directory is important.

There is potential for involvement in a future data warehouse initiative, depending on project scope. This role has the flexibility to be part-time now, full-time over the summer, and part-time through the rest of 2026.


Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and support SQL Server environments (2014/2016 to 2022, with future 2025 awareness)
  • Perform query tuning, performance optimization, and troubleshooting
  • Manage backups, recovery strategies, and high availability configurations
  • Proactively monitor SQL Server, SSRS, CPU, disk, and network performance
  • Review logs (SQL, SSRS, Windows Event, job failures) and perform root cause analysis
  • Implement preventative measures to reduce recurring issues
  • Support data migration and integration initiatives
  • Provide advisory guidance, recommendations, and best practices to improve operations

Technical Environment

Required

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2014, 2016, 2022 (specifically experience upgrading to 2022 or 2025)
  • SQL query tuning and performance optimization
  • Backup and recovery planning
  • High availability / clustering
  • SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)
  • Windows Server fundamentals

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with SQL Server 2025
  • Active Directory troubleshooting
  • Data warehouse experience

Ideal Candidate

  • Experienced SQL Server DBA with version upgrade experience
  • Able to work independently and respond quickly when issues arise
  • Strong problem-solving and advisory skills
  • Comfortable explaining concepts, offering suggestions, and guiding improvements
